What Is Retinopathy And How Is It Related To Obesity?

Obesity is a serious public health problem that is turning into an epidemic. Overeating, coupled with a sedentary lifestyle, are the main causes of the recent accelerating rate of obesity. There are some eye diseases that can also be associated with obesity.

Retinopathy or mostly known as diabetic retinopathy is a complication in eyes that mainly occurs due to diabetes. It is caused when the blood vessels in the tissues of the retina get damaged due to abnormal blood flow or blood sugar. The risk of retinopathy has also been linked to an increased waist-hip ratio. Abdominal obesity, glycemia and hypertension are strong determinants for retinopathy development. Other eye conditions that can be caused because of obesity are hypertensive retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion.

Diabetic Retinopathy often cannot be cured but there are few ways to treat it. The way of treatment mostly depends on the severity of the disease. It can be treated through self-care, medication, or surgery. Types of surgeries include Vitrectomy, Laser coagulation and laser surgery. But an easier way to prevent retinopathy is weight reduction if you are suffering from obesity.

Keeping our weight under control can also be a must to maintain a healthy vision. Maintaing your weight is a life-long effort that should be taken seriously. Find different ways to keep your body toned.

One is, of course, exercise. A 20-30 minute walk at a brisk pace, 4 times a week can greatly improve cardiovascular health. A goal of 10,000 steps a day is highly encouraged. But that doesn’t mean you have to walk the whole way to your workplace. In other words, if you park toward the back of the parking lot or take the stairs, you will increase your steps.

Another way is weight loss surgery if your BMI has gone above 35. So, keep your weight in check and reduce the chances of retinopathy.
